I live in a very congested neighborhood of Chicago. Each year, I escape to rural Iowa to quilt with one of my best friends. Along with an enormous change in scenery, there is a mental escape that is achieved when one travels to a much slower, quieter, greener part of the country. These paintings are experiments with color, form, and the idea that landscape has an impact on our memories and mood.

Architecture has always been an inspiration for me on numerous levels. It amazes me how certain architecture styles bring about a certain mood or feel in my mind. As a landscape fan as well, these paintings were experiments in the idea that where we live or work can somehow be incorporated into the landscape.

In order to get my artwork onto my website, I felt a need to categorize the works by some means. To start, I am categorizing the artwork by “subject matter.” My work is typically either abstract or non-representational. Abstraction means I am creating an image in an abstract fashion that is not abstract, like an object, a landscape, or a figure. Non-representational means I am painting something that does not represent a thing. These works vary in their intended content; they may be abstract portraits, references to landscapes or nature, or still lifes.

CLSTR is a series that I began in late 2019 when I was approached by a gallery owner to show my work solo for the first time. These tended to be works that I started at the beginning of 2019, but that I had problems with figuring out how to proceed with them. As I tend to work intuitively, a very short deadline forced me to get to the “meat of the matter” with these pieces.
